My name is Matthew Coyte.

I’m a recent graduate of Concordia University’s journalism program with a minor in political science.

For the past four years, I’ve covered stories involving sports, technology, business, and arts that has been featured in publications such as The Globe and Mail, U Sports, Avenue Magazine, The Sprawl, CJLO Magazine and The Concordian.

While at Concordia, I was the recipient of the 2017-18 and 2018-19 Rogers Media Undergraduate Award for sports writing, covering the Concordia Stingers athletics program. In 2019-20 I also won the Sportsnet Award for Sports Reporting for my work covering Canadian university sports online, in print, and on my radio show CJLO Sports.

I spent the 2018 summer as an Editorial Intern at RedPoint Media working primarly for Avenue Magazine and WestJet Magazine. During my time with the company, I worked primarily in fact-checking and copy-editing, as well as generating magazine stories. I covered topics of crowdfunding, aging and travel.

In 2019, I worked as an Editorial Assistant with the Canadian Institute of Mining Magazine, where I covered daily mining news, new technologies within the industry, clean-tech, environmental issues, and public policy.

As a freelance journalist, I’m always looking for exciting and untold stories. From Calgary’s urban forest to diving into the history of bush plane pilots in the early 1920s and 30s, I love to write about topics that haven’t been covered before.

On top of working as a journalist, I am also a freelance digital content writer and copywriter who specializes in SEO-friendly, audience-oriented work on a variety of topics.
